Cagayan de Oro City SM Uptown Toy Fair 2018 – Day 1

Toy Kingdom and CDO Toyzone collaborated in organizing this toy fair. It was originally scheduled early last May, but had to be rescheduled a few times. Although it kind of bummed me out at first, I completely understood that they had to iron out details and tasks like inviting collectors, designating the event area and setting up display cases.

This event was the first toy fair I went to after starting my obsession with plastic model kits. I was particularly interested in the group build event where the attending builders worked together to complete their backlogs (or at least make their backlog pile smaller).

Aside from GunPla, toy collectors also featured their figures, statues and dioramas from DC, Marvel, Transformers, and Star Wars Franchises. They also had a dedicated display for die-cast cars and squeezed in a few Nendoroids.

There were some really great kits and custom work pieces featured. Most notable were the 1/100 Graze Commander Type snow diorama, weathered GM, and 1/100 Grimgerde.

The group build started after lunchtime, and the first kit in the queue was the MG 1/100 Psycho Zaku Ver. Ka. I kind of want this kit too, but the amount of runners inside the box made me a bit dizzy. I wasn’t able to help out at all because I left all my tools at home.

Laying out all the box contents made it apparent that this Zaku is one hell of a time sink. I saw someone pull out their MG 1/100 Full Armor Unicorn Gundam and that one had even more runners that this kit. It’s a shame I wasn’t able to attend day 2 for that Unicorn, but I was still thankful that I got to see the city’s long time builders apply their skills and experience.

I’m still pretty salty about not being able to help. My friend said that the local builders usually meet up and do group builds just like this one, so I’m gonna keep my eyes peeled for any announcements. And I’ll make sure to bring my tools with me.

CDO Toyzone holds a bigger event annually every November. I was still more interested in game figures and statues during last year’s show and didn’t dwell too much on the model kit displays. Things have changed and I hope I can get a few kits ready for display during this year’s show.

  1. That looks like a really fun time. I gave up building Gunpla years ago. I don’t have the time to do it, or the space to display finished models anymore. But I still love to check out the newest kits online. It’s pretty amazing to see really skilled builders do their thing.

  2. Aww that’s too bad, but I can understand. Even simply straight OOB builds take a lot of time to complete. I just started this year and hopefully I can continue with the hobby for a long time.
